It really, really bothers me when I run into old friends from high school, and stop to chat for a moment to catch up, and they say something like this:
"Hey what have you been up to? What school are you going to?"
Like they assume me telling them that I attend the University of Washington is any sort of indicator of "what I have been up to."
Yes, I take classes at UW. Yes I am a junior and a CHID major and live in the U District. Yes, I am admittedly a "Husky" and the places where I live and shop and learn are decorated in purple and gold.
But what I have been UP to? That bit of information is so far down on the list of things I would say I have been up to.
But how would a random person I used to know in high school understand if I told them I have released 2 albums, traveled to play shows all over the country, broadcast videos to an audience of 20,000 on YouTube, and am dating a boy who lives in another country?
They wouldn't. So I don't.
I told the aforementioned friend that I am a CHID major at UW and I spend a lot of time on YouTube. She probably thinks I watch videos of kittens or something. Sigh.

Beware of Luddites who want to crash anyone's online experience. Seems people can't relate to the internet and want to bring down anyone who uses it.
City inspectors come into my apartment and months later down at their office they refer to me as the guy with a computer (like no other apartment they inspected had a computer in it!) Yeah, so, I guess anything I say to authority figures would be grounds for them to seize my computer, since it may be the only computer they've ever seen in an apartment!

I think it's perfectly reasonable for someone not to expect to ask anything else. That IS all of what most people are up to. Especially Liberty people! It's not like we're from some rich Jewish neighborhood in LA or Upstate New York and everyone's a recording artist or a product rep or a filmmaker or something.
It's that Windows and Mirrors thing from Looking for Alaska. They're asking about school because school is important to them.
You can't really blame someone for having a narrower experience of life than you.
Yeah, it's pretty common here to just be asked what uni you're going to and what you're studying.
I'm glad I'm going back so I can stop telling people that I'm a dropout ;)
