The GameTruck.

"It's like forgetting the words to your favorite song
You can't believe it, you were always singing along
It was so easy and the words so sweet
You can't remember, you try to feel the beat"
-Regina Spektor, "Eet"

Guys, yesterday I went on a GAMETRUCK.

It's exactly what you would think it is: a big truck, with games inside. Games, four giant flatscreen TVs, and a whole row of comfy couches.

Tara met the owner of GameTruck at a networking party so he offered to let the Zaxy girls just come onboard and play around it for awhile. First we played an intense game of "Blur" and then we geeked out with a few rounds of Rockband 3. I want to live on the GameTruck. It was such a blast.

We're hoping to get to work with them in the future, so I'm looking forward to more GameTruck time. Fingers crossed.

In other news, I really enjoyed reading all of your answers to the Buffy Survey in my last post. It's nice to be welcomed into a fandom rather that getting a lot of "pffft you're not a really fan, you watched it almost a decade after it happened luuuzzaar."

I've been having a bit of an entertainment crisis recently, trying to figure out what to watch next. Buffy was so all-encompassing of my time for so long that it's difficult to figure out what can replace that. I've been doing a rewatch of Firefly but the series is not nearly long enough for that to count. In the meantime I've also been watching Coupling, that show that's sort of like the British Friends? It's been fun, and a nice little break from the more intense project of finishing 7 seasons of a sci-fi drama.

Next I'm considering finally watching all of The Big Bang Theory or hopping online and watching The Guild (because these are both shows I should have already watched by now and I'm embarrassed I haven't yet). But again, none of these are the show that will fill the void in my heart that only a new hour-long drama can fill.

Basically, I'll let you know when I make my decision.

Recently I've just been playing a lot of Wheel of Fortune on the Wii because it's my favorite gameshow and one of those games I'm weirdly good at. And, you know, writing and making videos and other productive things. I shouldn't even try to pretend to be an upstanding memver of society right now; I just joined TUMBLR. Let's all watch the rapid decline of my life.

Big Bang Theory is a really awesome show, so I definitely recommend that. Sheldon Cooper is the best, I swear. I liked the Buffy survey (I did it on my blog, too) and I liked seeing how completely different our answers are. I mean, we both watched the same show, and somehow we have completely different takes on the characters. It kind of blows my mind.

I can understand the time-wasting thing. I have days where I've somehow managed to spend 6 hours on Tumblr and not realize it. Enjoy your time, though. :)

You should watch the Vampire Diaries. So freaking good. Soldier through the first 5-6 episodes because they're a little shaky, but after that, seriously, trust me. Try it.

Jessica said...

Oooooh I love the big bang theory so much !! Sheldon<3<3 xD Hahahah I really think you ought to watch it :)

But tumblr - really ? I just don't see the point of it... but if you like it then.. xD

And another thing that's kinda random perhaps but I'll ask anyways - are you going to release some new all caps t-shirts any time soon ? Because I really, really want one :/ :)

The Guild is really good, but the whole thing is only a few hours long. If you haven't seen Babylon 5 yet, I strongly recommend it. It's a five-season long space opera from the nineties about what is essentially an intergalactic United Nations. The first season is only so-so, but it was written as a novel for television so it gets much, much better with time. It's a really epic, engaging, and engrossing story.

Victoria said...

I didn't like BBT - it seemed to me like an early 90s sitcom, except with blogs and Facebook and the like. Not that there's anything wrong with 90s sitcoms, just not my thing.
But the Guild - YES!

I can't believe the nerdiness of what I am about to say, but if you're at all into Star Trek and you haven't watched all off Voyager, then I really reccommend it. I love the characters so much and am starting back at season one and watching the whole way through.
I don't know how it would compare to Buffy as it is currently on my 'to watch' list, but I really love it :)

You have to watch Primeval. I don't think you have watched this show, and you NEED TO! It is a bit like Dr Who, but quite different... if you know what I mean. It is British (equalling AWESOME). The whole thing is about these wormholes in time which appear and animals from the past and future can come through them etc. Humans can go through them as well. It is set in London. Seriously a MUST see show! on it's fourth series now. There was an (important)one year gap in-between S3 and S4 because stupid ITV cut the show.

If you want to really nerd out, you should take a look at BATTLESTAR GALACTICA!

You should definitely give the BBC show Sherlock a go :D
They are pretty long episodes but they are truly amazing!

The gaming truck sounds so amazing !

Definitely watch Big Bang Theory ! But might I also suggest BBC's Merlin ? I have reasons !

1. It has Anthony Head. Anthony Head is awesome. And it's a very anti-Giles role which is neat. You're meant to hate his character but I just CAN'T. Oh, the humanity.
2. It reminds me a lot of Buffy with the whole "monster/bad guy of the day we gotta kick its ass" and Merlin being a secret and unsung hero.
3. Bradley James. He's hot. *shallow reason woo*
4. The 3rd season just wrapped up not too long ago, but it has short seasons (around 13 eps) so it wouldn't be quite as daunting as say, the Buffy marathon you just pulled)

You should watch Dollhouse. Whedon does amazing things with it and so many Buffy actors make appearances. And Angel is pretty good too. :)

Hey Kristina!
You should watch the series The Pillars of the Earth. It is an amazing book by Ken Follet and all of it's 8 episodes are on Netflix instant watch.
It has Mathew McFayden in it (he played Mr. Darcy in the newest Pride and Prejudice) and all the acting is amazing.
If you watch it tell us what you think! I though it was amazing and you should check it out. It is an amazing and it will definately help get you out of your Post Buffy Depression!

I really enjoyed BBC's Robin Hood series, and my family and I are now in the midst of watching their Merlin show (both available for Netflix streaming). They're fun and emotionally engaging with lovable characters, even if they are a bit predictable. Seriously, they're both awesome.

...when do you think "netflix" will become a dictionary word? Or at least not register as an incorrect spelling in Google Chrome?

Cassie said...

Watch Big Bang Theory. Do it. I really need to watch Buffy, but I can't watch it until I finish Heroes and I can't finish Heroes because it's grossing me out.

Stella Rae said...

Hahaha Big Bang Theory is one of my favorite shows...you'll love it. I also like the song Eet by Regina Spektor!

Elisabeth said...

How about Angel? You're not even completely leaving Buffy's world behind, that way.

Big Bang Theory is good too, though. And How I Met Your Mother, which I don't remember you having mentioned yet so I'm guessing you haven't seen it. Which you really need to watch because it's awesome.

Matt said...

I agree about watching Big Bang Theory. It's an awesome show and I think you'll enjoy the nerdiness of it.

As far as an hour-long drama, I'd recommend Dexter if you haven't seen it already. It's not everybody's cup of tea, but I think it's pretty awesome.

J said...

I know that you will totally love The Guild; I recommend watching it first because its something you are bound to be quoting from for the rest of your WOW days.

Also: you have earned +50 awesome points for starting a blog post with a Regina Spektor song. <333

(Fun fact: The third line in that stanza is the name of my Tumblog XD)

Big Bang Theory's a great show! :D

I'm totally in the post-buffy-now-what-do-i-do stage too. I'm watching Dollhouse. But I'm almost done with the first season and there's only one more so I have to come up with something else soon. hmmmm....

Julia said...

I love Big Bang Theory and The Guild. You should definitely watch both of those. I also like Community which is a fairly new sitcom and Psych which is a hilarious murder mystery show full of pop culture and nerd type references.

And good luck with the tumblr!

So the Game truck sounds awesome! extremely jealous because I love Rock Band, but I really just can't play it. (I have no hand eye coordination.. sigh) Maybe try watching Bones if you haven't already! I loved it but recently I haven't had time to watch it!

Can't wait to see what you pick!

p.s. I love Regina Spektor! I sang Eet for my Senior Showcase at school!

Stephanie said...

Big Bang Theory is the best. Love it. As far as another drama show goes though...I have a feeling you might like Supernatural. And there's 6 seasons.

Alex Dahlberry said...

That truck sounds absolutely fantastic. And possibly horrible for the environment?
Also, tumblr will swallow your life and your sense of humour. I warn you.

And and and if you haven't watched Doctor Who yet, WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE? XD
I also recommend Torchwood. and Dollhouse! Bloody brilliant.

If you watch the Big Bang Theory, I'd like to hear your opinion. A lot of people tell me I'd love it and it's just the show for me, yet some people say it's really not that good. So I dunno.

Hope you're doing well,
Alex.

So far, I have not seen one Coupling comment which is outrageous because it is sooooo good! I hope you're enjoying it--though beware the fourth season...

I really love BBT too and I second whoever said Battlestar :)

Please tell me you've been watching Modern Family too? It's my new fav :)

Kristen said...

I second the commentor who suggested Veronica Mars. It will suck you in. It has a strong female lead and smart, witty dialogue. What's not to love? Though if you are in need of some good comedic laughs, Big Bang YES, you must watch. I am also another Sheldon fan.

Anonymous said...

I third Veronica Mars, I just finished watching all 3 seasons for the 3rd time, it's one of my favorite shows, I was so sad when it got cancelled. Another really good show even though it's only 2 seasons is Dead Like Me. Big Bang Theory is a really good choice though, also How I met your mother, THERE ARE SO MANY SERIES YOU NEED TO WATCH!! lol but yeah I would definitely start with Veronica Mars since it's only 3 seasons long.
Have Fun!

I love Big Bang Theory, It's so funny! Good luck with tumblr! I need to stay away from it- I already do too much online and I need to do things like play with my kids xD Hope you have a wonderful day!

Alias.

Jennifer Garner is a kickass spy, the show was created by J.J. Abrams (LOST), and it has a sci-fi aspect to it. So good! 6 seasons of hour long episodes-watch the first 2 and you'll be hooked!

meencantasevilla said...

Hey Kristina! I love reading your blog! I was SO happy when you started writing about Buffy! Welcome to the fandom! If you're looking for shows that will suck you in, I'd recommend watching Dexter, Six Feet Under, and The West Wing (if you haven't already). They're all shows I watched really quickly once I started - I just couldn't get enough. If you're looking for something lighter (but equally compelling), I'd recommend the Gilmore Girls. Though, I found great humour in all on the shows on this list. Oh and the two seasons of Pushing Daisies are quite wonderful as well. Not to mention they feature Kristin Chenoweth. Angel's good too if you're looking for a continuation of Buffy / want to see the Cordelia and Wesley characters grow. Plus Buffy, Oz, and Willow pop in every so often. What's not to love? Happy Friday!

meencantasevilla said...

Not to double post like a punk (I'm new to this whole blogger commenting stuff) but I forgot to mention that Spike goes to Angel after Buffy ends. So he's in all of Season 5 of Angel. The whole Spike/Angel dynamic is pretty amazing. It's up there with when Spike and Giles lived together. Classic!

Anonymous said...

You should watch Fringe! It really is the best sci-fi show out there. Although season 1 can get a bit clunky sometimes, once the concept of parallel universes is introduced, the show really takes off. Season 3 has been PHENOMENAL and believe me, it won't take long for you to catch up!

Dominique (Zoe) said...

The GameTruck sounds fun. Also, I've never seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer at my age. And, te Big Bang Theory really is a great show. Sheldon Cooper makes me laugh so hard. :)

Watch True Blood.

AbbySchmidt said...

Supernatural is an awesome sci-fi/fantasy/drama with very attractive men, it is in it's 6th season right now, It probably won't fill the buffy void completely but it is an awesome show.

Shelby said...

Watch The Big Bang Theory while you're looking for another great show to fill in for Buffy. It's hilarious. Don't worry about a decline in your life. Everyone has those. They're no big deal. No matter what happens everything becomes a learning experience. Stay Excellent :)

You should watch Skins UK. Its so good! I didn't even bother to watch the first episode of the US version. It's like Degrassie but British and so much more interesting.

richardpatrick said...

Go for the BBT. I've just recently seen them all and they are just amazing!

comelygrace said...

Big Bang Theory is good, but you should watch Psych! I think all the past seasons are on Netflix and you can play catch up until it comes back on USA Network this summer! It's a detective/mystery show but it's a comedy and I love Shawn and Gus, the two main characters. Weirdly, my favorite thing about the show is looking out for and successfully finding the pineapple that they put somewhere in every episode. The show is ridiculously awesome.

AngelaB said...

Battlestar!!

I completely recommend the British show Misfits. I just started watching, and there aren't a lot of episodes yet (two seasons, but each season only has six episodes), but it's so fucking good so far. I really am completely in love with it.

Sarah said...

The Big Bang Theory is pure brilliance! It's hilarious and Sheldon, whilst he can be annoying as hell, is really the funniest part of the show. If you haven't seen it, you really won't regret watching it.

A lot of your readers have some good suggestions for shows to watch, and I'm going to follow suit.

First, someone else suggested this, but Supernatural is a wonderful show with quite a few seasons that you can enjoy. It's about two brothers who travel around the US, fighting monsters and demons and trying to find their dad. It's wonderful and funny and the two leads are awesome.

Second, though this one was incredibly short-lived and its first season was cut way too short, it is unbelievably good. It's called Wonderfalls and I highly recommend it. It's about a snarky underachiever living in Niagra Falls who starts to have inanimate objects (usually animals of some sort) talk to her and tell her to do things. It's creative, charming, witty, and totally unique. I can so see you falling in love with the main character, Jay.

I know you have a ton of other suggestions, but you should really check out Wonderfalls. Oh, and bonus! Kayley from Firefly is in a few episodes, as well as Lee Pace from Pushing Daisies. A great ensemble cast with a lot of heart.

Finally, if you watch the show and inevitably fall in love with it (as it's so easy to do), Dead Like Me is a decent follow up with the same type of snarky main character and unusual style of editing and story telling.

I keep thinking of lots of other wonderful shows, but I really need to end this incredibly long post. Happy Watching!

Well, most of my major recommendations have already been made. A really good BBC miniseries is Jekyll. Only six episodes or so but it should be a nice brain relaxer after seven seasons of Buffy.

I also endorse BSG, Veronica Mars, Quantum Leap and Six Feet Under.

If only the networks would make my biography into a series; it's a shame there's no actor that good looking.

*wiggles eyebrow; backs away awkwardly*

You should watch fringe to fill the hole in your life. It's quite a bit like lost in that it raises a lot of questions, but unlike lost (based on what I've been told, because I have not watched lost). It answers all the questions and creates more. Kayley watches it, she can tell you how awesome it is =)

PS: Need to mark this somewhere, but I got "hyper" as my word verification

Victoria said...

Never heard of coupling?? But you should definitely watch the big bang theory, it's so good. I would also recommend The IT crowd (UK version), 4 seasons of the best thing ever. I'm in the middle of watching Dawson's Creek boxset- so good.

Tessa Jones said...

I've been watching Being Erica. There's 3 seasons available to me (I have Netflix) but I am still early in the 2nd season.
I like it.

How I Met Your Mother. I just discovered it. It's amazing.

Crystal's Blog said...

I feel like I need to sell How I Met Your Mother more. A) It has Alyson Hannigan in it. B) It has Alexis Denisof (Wesley) in the first season. C) Denisof and Hannigan actually are married. D) It has Neil Patrick Harris in it. And finally, E) It's LEGEN...wait for it...and I hope your not lactose intolerant because the second half of that word is DAIRY!

I thought, you said, you never wanted to join Tumblr. Well, welcome to the club. If you are anything like me, you will waste a lot of your time on there just looking at pretty pictures of nothing.

You should really watch The Big Bang Theory! I am in love with that show. It's really humorous in a very nerdy way and not in that lame way shows in the same genre usually are. I'd definitely recommend it.

nelamonster said...

Okay, here are two of some of my favorites which you may not know.
First, Samantha Who, a sitcom, unfortunately only two seasons, which I can't get over because I loved it so much. It's about a girl who lost her memory in a car accident and now has to learn how to live her life again, except she discovers she used to be a real slut, and now she's trying to fix all the mean things she's done in her pre-accident life. I think it's very well written and Christina Applegate is so funny.
And now to the genre I usually watch which is science-fiction / fantasy. OMG, The Legend of the Seeker!!!! Okay, so it's more of a fantasy show, witchcraft and prophecies etc. It's based on this book, the Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind, again not too long, only two seasons, but it's really captivating and really aesthetically pleasing if you're into gloomy forests/ medieval castles fantasy-adventure type of thing.

Alex said...

The Big Bang Theory! I'm watching it online - I'm in the middle of season three. It just makes me laugh all of the time, and it's genuinely smart. Highly recommended. In a strange coincidence, after I finish that I'm going to be watching Buffy!

Dee said...

I started watching Community after I finished Buffy, and it's turned into one of my favorite shows. I've also heard Parks and Recreation is really good, but couldn't get past the pilot.

Also, THE IT CROWD!!!! It's british and it's about computer nerds. People like to compare it to the Big Bang Theory, but while they follow the same dynamic (geeks and a "ditzy" girl, sitcom-style), they aren't comparable.

And Battlestar Galactica, of course!

Hannah Lobb said...

I love ReSpekt, you quoting Eet definitely made my day. (:

You need to watch Doctor Who! My favourite shows currently are Doctor Who, Buffy, and Merlin. All the protagonists in the shows are adorable. Plus, Anthony Head shows up at least once in all of them*. x)

I wish I had a GameTruck.

*I hate his character in Merlin, Uthur, though. Nothing against him, he plays it brilliantly, but the character bugs me.
Additionally, it's sad he only shows up in one DW episode as an evil-demon principal/headmaster thing.
