Musings on the end of BSG (no spoilers).

Oh man. I don't even really have time to be updating my blog right now, but I can't help myself. I have a million things to do today (we're starting filming again tomorrow and there's always a mile-long list of things to do before our shoots) but I am in one of those crazy states of mind that I feel like I just need to capture.

Last night I finished watching Battlestar Galactica.

I'm a big, big fan of television. I'm all about the intricate storytelling, the breathtaking visuals, the actors so good at their jobs that it makes you feel uncomfortable to remember that they're real people with lives outside the show. That many (if not all) of the people on Battlestar Galactica have probably never actually shot a gun, have never been in space, have never met a real Cylon.

Each time I finish an incredible show, I have a really difficult time letting go. Good storytelling affects me in ways that I can't explain, ways that make me feel for a little while like there will never be anything as good ever again.

But, after Lost, there was Doctor Who. And after Doctor Who, there was Buffy. And after Buffy, there was Battlestar Galactica. Each time I let another show in, I feel like the bar gets set even higher, and new shows keep surpassing my previous expectations for how good television can get.

It's getting to the point where I can't even rank my favorites, but Battlestar will always have a slot near the very top of my list. I can't even explain in words how deeply I fell in love with this show, and even though it's over now, it will always be there in the back of my mind. Kara Thrace, Admiral Adama, Laura Roslin, Lee, Sam, Sharon, Gaius, Six, Helo, Hera, The Chief... they're not going anywhere. Just like every other great tv show and book and movie that's ever affected me is here to stay, so are the characters from BSG.

I am experiencing that perfect mix of slightly hollow yet completely satisfied now that it's over, and I feel so fortunate that I get to celebrate the ending of this wonderful TV series with EMP's Galactibash tonight. Perfect timing. Nothing makes me happier than to see slightly older fandoms still so relevant today, and I can't wait to party it up with the other BSG fans out this evening.

SO SAY WE ALL!

The BSG finale is
It always saddens me when somebody says that they didn't like the BSG finale.
I know everyone's entitled to their opinions, and i don't want to force mine upon them, but often the reasoning they give makes me think that they saw the show as a whole very differently and missed a lot of its greatness.

I know and totally TOTALLY understand that you're uber-busy with the Job Hunters Project right now... but are you still also busy with lessthanthree? I know you will be, but... HOW DO YOU DO ALL THIS STUFF?!

You believe in God, right? I find this has a pretty big impact on people's impression of the ending of BSG (and to a lesser extent Lost). There are certain themes that are beautiful to some but not others--Tim Minchin has a line, "some of the hymns that they sing have nice chords but the lyrics are dodgy," which is pretty well related to what I mean. Can't really get into specifics here as you want to keep the discussion spoiler-free.

Also Episode 13, "Sometimes A Great Notion" would have made a beautiful ending, the last 9 eps were mostly an unnecessary return to the human drama of the early seasons when there was such a crescendo of grandeur and greatness (and frankly awe and mystery) through the first 13 eps of season 4.

Okay, I have got to start watching this show. You've gotten me very excited. :) Good luck filming Job Hunters tomorrow! Hope you enjoyed the Galactibash, and you aren't too tired in the morning!

Are you not watching Doctor Who anymore? I have the box set of Battlestar, but have yet to set down and dedicate myself to watch it. At least some shows get a decent run on t.v. I have breakdowns when things get cancelled that I love! (cough, cough. Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles. wtf!!)

I can't believe you watched this!! YAY! I was so sad when it finished... but it was fitting, you know? It had to happen. I loved it, how you could connect to them, how they had normal problems. :)

I recommend reading "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" it's amazing. I have not even finished reading it yet and i can tell that it's going to be one of those books that leaves me in awe.

I also recommend "The Elegance of the Hedgehog." The little girl on the cover looks like she could be your younger sister.

"Fruits Basket" is a series that I thought would be a silly book series to read, but it actually has some real depth to it... I was stunned by how much I fell in love with these books. "Fullmetal Alchemist" too.

As someone who loves Harry Potter, I also tend to be quite obsessive with my television series, books, and films. Thus I am always on the lookout for new series to read and watch... I also love new hobbies. I guess I just love losing myself in another world and new experiences in life.

While I think that it's admimirable you have completed viewing of said television series, I must also complete the same quest to truly understand this undertaking. Allow me this time to do so.

If you're looking for a new show to take over your life, I recommend Dexter with all my heart! It is, in my opinion, the greatest show on tv- brilliant storytelling, totally indiscriminate with race/gender in characters, and the acting is so convincing that I almost believe these characters exist somewhere out there.

I can't wait to finish BSG. I mean, I can.. because I love it so much and I would hate to see it leave my life right now, but I have all these theories and I need to see if they're even close to right!

A friend I introduced to BSG a few years ago is re-watching it all at the moment. I was over the other day while he was watching a few epps.

I was surprised how suspenseful and diverting it still is even having seen it all before and knowing what's going to happen.

My poor DVD's a so warn and damaged now after being loaned to friends and family. I may have to splash out on a new box set for my self. :)
