Total 2010 Recap

I haven't blogged in ages, and there is no excuse. But no time like the new year to rectify that, am I right?

I wrote in my planner a few days ago "write reflective blog post on 2010". I've been putting it off naturally, because how does one sum up an entire year? It seemed such a daunting task that I actually completed "do laundry", "clean up house from birthday party" and "renew Disneyland annual pass first" -- which are all incredibly painful chores, I assure you.

2010 was an amazing year for me. I think one is doing a grand job living their life if each year surpasses the last, and so far in my 23 years of life I feel I have managed to accomplish this for myself. I'm going to go through the months and try to remember the highlights and accomplishments from this year.

January: This may not seem like a huge deal, but I got my first smart phone in January. Google sent me the Nexus One as a gift, and since I don't have T-Mobile I traded it for an HTC Hero for Sprint and sad as it sounds, it has kind of changed my life. Being able to check email, tweet, do so many social-networky things from literally anywhere has completely changed what it means to be plugged in, and I think it's only helped to create this self brand I've been building online.

February: I registered for my last quarter of college. I spent a lot of time at home really bonding with roommates. I started to realize I was outgrowing my job at the theatre that I had loved for so long. I spent another Valentine's Day alone, which in actuality means Eia and I spent another Valentine's day with our credit cards at the mall. I did a huge zombie photoshoot with NightZero where we shot about 80 different frames for a vignette in a single day. And Luke came to Mexico with my family and I for a lovely week in the sun.

March: Luke came to Seattle and we filmed the Don't Unplug Me and World of Warcraft music videos. Our album "Bmin/E" came out this month. I think this was a huge turning point in my life, to be honest. I kind of feel like everything changed after Bmin/E came out. ALL CAPS went almost instantly from a fun hobby to my legitimate job, and the opportunities that started pouring in were incredible. We had a big NightZero party at our house, which was another good step in the direction of me making more friends in Seattle. Then that month, I quit my theatre job. It was a hard decision, but in hindsight, it was the right one.

April: I saw one of my favorite bands, Muse, in concert for the second time. I don't think I could ever see this band live too many times. It's just such a breathtaking experience. Then on Easter weekend, I went with my parents to a casino for the first time (which was the first of many, surprisingly). Took my second trip to LA of the year. My roommate Justin and I started the "Back to the Future Game" which essentially just means we turn on the TV and hope Back to the Future is on (which we're still playing actually, though we also started one for Spongebob since then). This month is also the month I think I started becoming friends with Ariana, who I had no idea at the time would become one of my best friends. I auditioned for America's Next Top Model. xD I also met the lovely security guard at my local bank this month, who became a regular character in my blog. Hallows and Horcruxes Ball 3 was this month, and Luke and I performed "Lumos Flies" - technically our first live ALL CAPS performance. Also, unbeknownst to the world, I started playing WoW.

May: I started to get to know Tara, who I had no idea would also become a very good friend of mine. Save the Children invited me to come along to Washington DC for Advocacy Day, which was the first time I took any sort of trip because of YouTube for social activism. Luke came out to visit one more time before heading to Wyoming for the summer, and I spent the better part of this month slaving over my Senior Thesis. I watched the Series finale of Lost, bringing a huge chapter of my life to an end. Went on my family's annual camping trip that I had missed the previous three years because of HP events.

June: Graduated from the University of Washington. It felt surreal - simultaneously like I had been in college forever, and like no time had passed at all since high school. I didn't enjoy college as much as I'd hoped, so finishing was a monumental occasion for me, one I was very proud of. Tara asked me to become a permanent writer for Zaxy.com. I started watching the Shaytards on YouTube. I left for summer tour.

July: Most of this month was tour. I learned so much about myself and my friends on this tour - and for the most part, had a total blast. I went to VidCon, where ALL CAPS got to close the mainstage show the first night. I went to Infinitus, where I got to experience the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and definitely cried the first time I stepped into Hogsmeade. One of my favorite cousins got married and my family was right there at the wedding cheering him on. I started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

August: I blogged every day in August. I went to the Renaissance Faire with my friends and met a whole bunch of new people there I had no idea would become good friends of mine later on. Again, I spent a lot more time bonding with my Seattle friends, after a crazy summer of being gone. Powered through about 4 seasons of Buffy. Read Mockingjay, a heart-wrenching and powerful book I'd been looking forward to all year. America's Next Top Model called me in for a private audition for Cycle 16, but my flight got cancelled and I didn't get to go. My roommate and friend PJ moved out of our house. I continued to get to know Tara and the other new Zaxy writer, Brittney, and we started our semi-regular Zaxy sleepovers.

September: I went to the Bahamas with my two best friends, Eia and Liz and had such an amazing wonderful relaxing time. I got to attend PAX Prime here in Seattle, experiencing a whole world of video games I didn't even know existed. I went to LA again, my third trip in 2010. Luke and I worked on our acoustic album but mostly played Magic the Gathering all week. I got ready to leave for fall tour.

October: Went to my hometown's annual parade, saw my brother in his marching band for the last time (he's a Senior). Most of this month was spent on fall tour, which was possibly even more incredible than summer tour. Getting to spend that much time on the road with my best friends is an experience that's not even comparable to anything else. Got to know Ariana a lot more and started getting really close with her. Broke my toe, went to ZomBcon and had a hilariously wonderful Halloween party at our place in Seattle.

November: Most of this month was NaNoWriMo. Successfully completed my 5th year of writing 50,000 words in a month. Attended Wrockstock 4. Went to LA for the fourth time in 2010 and spent a lot of time with friends down there. Came home and essentially locked myself in my room and wrote for the remainder of the month. Eia moved out of my house, which was sad, but gave me her huge bedroom which is so much better for making videos and recording music.

December: Went to Guatemala with Save the Children, which was an awe-inspiring, life changing experience. Went down to LA for a fifth time, this time for the Project 4 Awesome livestream that was also a pretty mind-boggling thing to be a part of. Met a ton of YouTubers (including Shay and Katilette, which was awesome) and for the first time, really felt like an important member of this community on a larger scale. Came home, spent time with Seattle friends, spent Christmas with my family, had an amazing birthday with my friends at my house, saw the Harry Potter Exhibition and now I'm getting ready for New Year's Eve, the end of this incredible year, and the start of one I can only hope is going to be even better.

I was going to wax philosophical about the tone and feel and themes of my year, but I think this summary is sufficient to stand alone. I'm going to let this all stew, and go into the new year without any expectations or implications. Thanks for coming along with me on this crazy trainride of my life, and I hope you'll stick around to see what the next chapter brings.

Total chipotle burritos in 2010: Only something like 26, I lost count.
Last google search of 2010: "renew Disney annual pass"

I feel like I should go out with a question here -- for the comments, what was your absolute favorite memory of 2010? Also, did I meet you this year? If so, tell me when!

Reading this back makes me really happy Kristina, the last couple of months for 2010 have been pretty rubbish for me.

I want to have an amazing 2011, somthing like you 2010 year, have you got any advice for me to help me achieve this?

Sounds like a reaaaally amazing year for you Kristina.
My best moments in 2010 were probably my trips to London and the concert of my favourite band.
Have a nice 2011, all the best <3

My favorite moment of 2010 was getting to go to Infinitus, my first HP con + the WWoHP!! So awesome. And I did meet you this year at the Denver show of ROFLCOPTOUR! A great show, so much fun.

I met you at infinitus you seemed kind of mad about something so I just smiled awkwardly and got my all caps things signed. I hope you have an amazing 2011 and I'm glad I get to share adventures with you

My favorite memories of this year are a tie - meeting john green in chicago, or the return of my favorite fanfiction after a two year hiatus. They don't seem comparable, but for me they're too close to compare.

I very much agree with the sentiment about making each year better than the last. I also wrote a 2010 summary post (which won't be posted until midnight tonight, but the link if you want to read it then is http://elfarmywrites.blogspot.com), and this year has definitely been the best of my life.
My post was mostly centered around my writing, as that is the official purpose for my blog (although I talk about pretty much everything else under the sun), but I really loved reading your more comprehensive one.
The thought of a long distance relationship makes me sad, so I'm incredibly happy to see how often you and Luke got to see each other, despite living on opposite ends of the country. Tour sounds...amazing, and I'm so glad to have been able to make it to the Roflcoptour show in Apex. It was one of my favorite events that I attended out of the year.
Also, I'm glad that blogging is one of your resolutions, as I smile every time I see there's a new post here. Google Reader ftw. I love hearing about your life, whether it's music or HP or personal.
Best wishes for 2011 and much love in your direction! :)

I got to meet you at your Atlanta show on 7/19. You were the sweetest, most open person--I'm still surprised at how nice you were to an incredibly awkward person. I'm sure you wouldn't remember me. I bought the two ALL CAPS cds, because I was a new fan and wanted to wait to get the physicals. You were sweet enough to wait for me to get them out of their shrink wrap, and made small talk while I did so.

Thanks, Kristina. I found you and 5AG this year. I found a lot of other nerdfighter-ly things through you. You've made my year awesome.

My favorite memory of 2010 was definitely Infinitus, the whole experience was undoubtedly the best of my life. I absolutely adore the Harry Potter fandom. Can't wait for Leaky!
I met you at Infinitus. :) Unfortunately, at the time I met you, I didn't watch any of your youtube channels regularly yet, and I only knew one ALL CAPS song (wtf was I doing with my life?!?), so I wasn't fanning out enough to ask you for a picture. But since I was (and am) a Parselmouths fan, I did get yours and Eia's autographs. I also bought a pin using my last dollar (you probably don't remember me, because I know you met so many other people, but I told you that. xD)
Thanks for everything you've done this year, you are truly awesome. Can't wait for next year!

Infinitus 2010 was the best experience I had this year. This is also where I saw you, in person, for the first time.

Hope you have a wonderful New Year's celebration with your family and friends. And looking forward to your new endeavors in Eleven.

Newt said...

It's hard to pick a favorite, because a lot of really good things happened.
For one, starting to use FanFiction forums. I've met the most amazing people there, and it's definitely changed me as a person and as a writer.
Another thing was NaNoWriMo 2010. This was my first year doing NaNo, and I really suprised myself, finishing with four and a half days left in November.
Pretty much any time I spent with my friends was amazing. Our pretty much monthly movie visits, our Jello fight, our tent sleep-over, and everything in between. Meeting them in general, even, because we didn't really start getting close until 2010 began.
When I think about my life, I immediatly think boring. But when I actually look at it, I've done a lot of things I'm proud of, or at the very least had fun doing.
Thanks for making me see that and making me smile.
Happy New Year!
Oh, and Pokemon. Definitely Pokemon. I've only had it for like six days, but it has over 21 hours on it. Shh...

What an awesome year! My favorite moments were going to see Green Day with my best friend, and learning to play Bassoon! And of course meeting you at the DC Gathering of TRA. (My sister was the one who gave you the crowns.)

Hope you have an amazing 2011!

Jen said...

I didn't really do much in 2010. Living in a rural area and not being able to drive anywhere on my own tends to limit my activities to wandering my house. So my favorite part of the year was probably going on my family's camping trip for the tenth time in a row or something like that.

However, I hope I actually get to do stuff in 2011, like actually go out to eat with friends, or attend a gathering. Or change my social skills so I'm no longer a hermit.

I just sound like a whiner. I'm sorry. I'm glad you had a fun year, and I'm sure next year will surpass it.

Favorite memories: definitely my seventeenth birthday. I fell in love with my life all over again, while surrounded by my family and friends.

Have we met: YES!!!!!!! We met at the freeform TripleRainbowAwesome D.C. show in October. It was a paradigm shift to see all your YouTube-y faces in real life.

Jessie said...

I think the best thing about 2010 was that I really got into YouTube, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, and the Hunger Games.
I met you this year at the Triple Rainbow Awesome Tour in New York! That was truly one of the best nights of the year; I had so much fun and I really hope you guys come back to NY for another tour.

Unknown said...

You met me this year! It was at you Decatur ROFLCOPTOUR show. And that's probably my best memory from this year, even though my speedometer broke on the way there and I had to drive the full five hours home hoping I was going the speed limit every time I saw a cop car...

Unknown said...

My absolute favorite memory of this year was getting to see ROFLCOPTOUR during the summer :D It was my first concert, and I was ecstatic that it could be a Wizard Rock and ALL CAPS concert. You and Luke did a 3o second shout out clip to my best friend. I gave it to her as a going away present, and that pretty much made me the best best friend ever according to her.

I also got to see The Remus Lupins and Jason Munday later that summer. Alex signed my teddy bear, which was amazing.

So thanks for being my first concert Kristina, hope you have a great 2011 :D

anna said...

The fact that you marked the month when you started watching Shaytards is awesome. You win at life, Kristina.

As for my favorite memory of 2010 . . . Near the tail end of my freshman year of college I solidified my friendship with the guy who really became my best friend. That was really awesome.

Amy said...

Your year sounds amazing. I'm glad wonderul thing are happening for you- good luck in 2011!

2010 for me wasn't bad but not great I hope to change that in 2011 and make it memorable. I hate feeling that a year wasn't good but nothing really stands out other then wonderful thing I have in my life every year like my family.

I did get to meet you in October at the 3RA in Ames- I'm the one with the crazy twin girls. It was fantastic to meet you and I hope to see you again the next time you come to Iowa! My girls also enjoyed their first concert too :)

We did meet. On the Indianapolis leg of the tour. Remember that girl who licked Luke's face? Yeah. That was me. I'm still proud. Next time, I want to lick your face. Or would that be creepy? ...Nah.

You got a private audition?! What a shame your flight was cncelled - that would have been the best cycle of ANTM =p Are you going to audition next time?
2010 hasn't been amazing sadly....maybe the best memory was moving into a house for the first time (as in, with housemates rather than parents) although housemate stress rather overshadowed that.

emily. said...

2010 was too good to me for me to have a specific favourite memory. I guess my absolute favourite part is that I can sort of be myself around other people more than ever now, because of things that happened over the course of the year. I mean, people judge me more now because I'm no longer "normal" (meaning I don't listen to Justin Bieber or rap music, and don't shop strictly at Hollister/AE, etc) but I'm having more fun now C=
Happy twenty-double-one!

DragonStone said...

I guess that would have to be when I finally took that flying leap into the big scary ocean known as NaNoWriMo. I really surprised myself by reaching 50,000 words. Just wow... I plan to hammer out my story over the next couple of months so that I can use that code to get myself a free proof copy. Can't wait for that!

Margaret said...

Oh Kristina, I met you TWICE this year! Once, when you went to infinitus, where I awkwardly stalked you in the merch room and took a picture with you at the ball when my friend tricked me in to talking to you (I was nervous at first), and then again this past October when you were at your DC tour stop. You signed my pony! xD I have so many wonderful memories of you this past year, especially the van videos from TRA tour.

Dingus is stupid. Don't be a Dingus. (I got to ban him!)

2010 was so awesome in so many ways. I started really participating in the wizard rock community, getting into it in a more major way than just listening to HatP here and there. I started watching the vlogbrothers, and watched all of their videos to date, which took like three months. I went to my first big HP convention (Wrockstock) and had a blast.

I suppose I didn't technically meet you this year; I, at different points, danced next to you, sat right behind you, and passed you in the hallways on multiple occasions at Wrockstock, and every time I was like, 'Oh my gosh that was Kristina Horner!' but since it was my first RL wizard rock event of any kind I was too starstruck to talk to very many people. Next year, though, next year! :D

I'm glad you had a good 2010 and I hope 2011 is even better!

I met you right before you graduated college. I met you because of Charlieissocoollike and instantly loved you. You are the reason I got a YouTube account, just because I wanted to subscribe to you. I've followed you ever since then and your the reason I did Nanowrimo (and won!) Your also the reason I became a Nerdfighter. This year was infinitely more awesome all because I looked up 'Mrs. Nerimon' on YouTube and found you.

My favourite memory from this year was the week I spent in San Francisco with my cousin, who is also one of my best friends (plus, it was my first time abroad, so double the excitement!).

I actually met you during that week as well, at Roflcoptour in Milpitas (I was the girl from Australia!).

It sounds like you had a really amazing year, and I hope your 2011 is just as awesome! :)

I'm having a hard time picking something memorable from 2010. While I did a lot of things, like go to my first official wrock concert, I didn't do anything life changing or anything.

I met you twice this year :) First in Hamden, CT for the start of Roflcoptour, and then again in Providence, RI for the finale of 3RA. Both were amazing shows that I was glad I made the drive for.

My favorite memory of 2010 was probably a photo scavenger hunt my friends and I had. We got my friend's sister to make us a list of things to do and take pictures of and we got more than 20 people to make teams and play.

I met you this year in Philly when I asked you to sign a headlight and my friend gave you her foam sword to beat up Luke with. Definitely the best show ever.

I hope you had a great year and I hope 2011 is even better!

Hopefully ALL CAPS can continue to be your full time job and I can meet you again!

My favorite 2010 memory would have to be all the time I spent with my high school friends before we all left to start college. I met you in Chicago (I was the girl with the silly bands :P)

I hope that I have a better 2011 than I had 2010. It definitely wasn't the greatest year, and maybe, since I finally moved to WA, I can meet the rest of the 5AG (a goal of mine).

Sounds (reads?) like it was an awesome year! :) I was happy to read that you cried the first time you went to the Wizarding World of HP. I'll be going for the first time while at LeakyCon this summer and expect to completely embarrass myself. :) It's like when I got a job working at the Lord of the Rings exhibition at the Museum of Science in Boston. The first time I entered the room, I cried. Made a great impression on my new boss! Ha ha! I hope 2011 is just as amazing for you. :-D

2020 has certainly been a year of discovery for me: Doctor Who, vlogging, Nanowrimo, and Nerdfighteria are just a few of the things I discovered this year. I met you at the Toronto stop of 3RA> I gave you a silly band in the shape of a genie, and I told you how my sister, my father and I all had to skip work to come to the show. It was my first concert ever, and you guys certainly made it memorable!
Thanks!

Looking back on this year there was a lot of good and bad. Too many trips to visit people in hospitals but at the same time I've been to WWoHP twice and Disney for Christmas. I discovered VlogBrothers and Five Awesome Girls. Got to see DH Part 1 five hours before the midnight showing on the east coast. I also restarted blogging after a year and a half long hiatus. I didn't get to meet you b/c I didn't find out about the RISD show until the day before... Wanted to go though! Have a good 2011 Kristina.

Yes, we've met. I went to the NJ show this summer when you were touring. I was wearing a WoW tee shirt and Luke told me you played. Then I admitted I hadn't read HP or seen the movies. I have since read all the books and have received all the movies for Christmas.

Happy 2011!

2010 was probably my best year so far because I graduated high school and was able to start making some of my own decisions, which is stressful and scary but also ridiculously liberating. The best thing about 2010 for me was INFINITUS and the wwohp =)

I did meet you this year! You came to Portland this summer in I think early July. I didn't really talk to you though, just took a picture of you with my friend. =)

I had a wonderful, wonderful 2010 in which I accomplished a lot and was really happy to stregnthen some great relationships. Although I have amazing memories from 2010, the first that popped into my head was a AVPM/AVPS sleepover party with a group of my closest friends. We watched, reenacted, and quoted both musicals, then read incredibly bad fan fiction until the sun came up. Then, after only a few hours of sleep we filmed a music video.
2010 was also really awesome because of the wonderful people I got to meet, one of them being you! I met you at Roflcoptour and you might remember me? I gave you the 5AG word cloud and Luke stole my sweater. It was an amazing night!

Yes, we met this year at the Triple Rainbow Awesome show in Kansas City. My sister had the yellow car purse, and I play Jason and Luke in Mario Kart.

My best moments in 2010 were the small ones when I just had really fun times with my friends. They have become so important to me and I love them. I'm a senior, and I'm sad to be leaving in the fall, but I hope to always be friends with them.

(Another cool moment was winning your ALL CAPS contest with Strawburry17. That was an exciting day) XD

I saw you on tour in Wyoming this summer and found so many new things after that. I started reading your blog, made one of my own, listened to a LOT of wrock, read the Hunger Games, and did NaNoWriMo. I'd never been to a concert before and it was amazing to hear music live. My little brother has decided his favorite song is World of Warcraft Ruined My Life. XD

Yes ! I met you at the Philadelphia ALL CAPS concert :)
It was amazing. Kristina, thank you so much for an awesome year ! You taught me that it's okay to be myself, to be different. And for that I am truly thankful. DFTBA :)

We met at the ROFLCOPTOUR show in Akron and again at the Triple Rainbow show at Hayley's church. I was also at Wrockstock but didn't get the chance to say hi. Looking forward to seeing you at LeakyCon in a few months! :)

I'm going to have to say that VidCon was my favorite 2010 memory though I also graduated. And I met you at VidCon! Hope to see you there again in 2011. I already registered and booked the hotel and I'm pretty excited. It is going to be really hard to wait til July.n

It's sad that you don't get t spend a whole lot of time with Luke! You two should be able to spend so much more time together!

i got my first smartphone in 2010 too! and um i think i have often earned incredulous looks with the way i often treat it like my baby. when i realised i'd forgotten my usb stick but that my phone worked as a harddrive, i nearly pranced around in joy. yep.

and yes, i had the HUGE pleasure of meeting you and luke and lauren and matt and jff and eia this summer in LA at your santa monica show. during which i very badly reminded you that you once mentioned me in a post aha. glad you had such a wonderful year :) hope 2011 is even better.

I still don't know if you read comments posted on older blogs, but here I am.
I met you in 2010 for a second time, but I don't think you remember me from the first time. (which was LeakyCon.) Roflcoptour in Poughkeepsie!

Which, coincidentally, actually was the highlight of 2010 for me. Not just the concert, but the whole weekend I spent with my internet friends who I had just met for the first time ever. That weekend is seriously my patronus.

Otherwise, it was interesting reading through a summary of your year. Your total satisfaction and appreciation for your life is inspiring and gives me hope. All I can wish for is to have a life like yours in my future.
